More details and study material to come in the new year!
Christmas @ ECC
Christmas is a time to celebrate with family and rest.
For Christians, we also celebrate the world-changing impact of Jesus: God coming into the world in human flesh. Because of Jesus we can enjoy being part of God’s family, as well as the freedom of knowing eternal rest Jesus brings to our lives.
We’ll be celebrating this in our Christmas services on 22 Dec, and Christmas Day.
Sunday Dec 22
Our Sunday service, filled with Christmas songs and a Christmas message.
Just like our usual Sunday service, adults and kids join in together for the first part of the service. The service starts at 9:30am, and this part goes for about half an hour.
During the service, the kids adjourn to our Sunday School program, called Way2Go, during the talk.
Around 10:45am when the service concludes, we enjoy morning tea together, finishing before midday.
Wednesday Dec 25
Our Christmas worship service will be for adults and children - we won’t have a specific program for kids, because our Christmas service will be especially engaging for all ages!
The service will start at 9:30am.
Christmas Day won’t have a morning tea, but you can expect people to linger around after the service for fellowship before .
If you’re looking for a gathering to join on Christmas day, let us know in the RSVP!
Dear ECC Pre-order
Ten years ago, for our 30th Anniversary, we commemorated the life our church in a book called "Food Faith Family". For our 40th Anniversary, we invited members of our church to write a letter to our church.
We’re going to publish those letters into a book called Dear ECC, and we’re almost ready to send our design to the printing studio. Dear ECC will be a coffee-table magazine style book which will sit nicely side-by-side with your copy of Food Faith Family.
Below are sample of pages from the book. The book will be approximately 76 pages, filled with your wonderful photos and words.
ECC 41st Anniversary
We’ll be concluding our This is Love series in 1 John, and it’s only right to live out the sense of brotherly and sisterly community we have over food!
We also celebrate another year of God’s ministry through ECC. A church is made up of so many people, loving and caring for one another in so many ways. Our service will be filled with thankfulness for all He enables.
Please RSVP using the form link below. You can let us know if you’re bringing a dish so we can plan accordingly. If you’re our guest - we don’t expect you to bring anything, just come and enjoy church and lunch with us!
Annual General Meeting
Our AGM is a time for us to celebrate what God is doing through the many facets of ministry at ECC. It’s a time that our leaders can share our vision for the upcoming year. It’s a time that shapes how we steward what we have to serve with. It’s a time for you to consider how you are part of a ministry that serves and builds a Kingdom for Christ.
We invite all people connected with the ministry of ECC to attend our AGM. If you’re not a member of ECC and would like to attend, we just ask that you inform Pastor Joel or one of the Elders by 15 November.
For voting members, we are seeking the confirmation of Elaine Chan as Deacon for another term (3 years). Elaine has previously served as a deacon, and her return to the church council brings a servant heart and experience to the team. The voting will be conducted during the AGM.
The AGM will commence at 11:30am on 17th November.
Term 4 Preaching: 1 John
1 John has an unwavering energy that says: “Hey! THIS is what life is about! We’ve finally understood it! THIS is the way!”. There is no resigned, pragmatic attitude - only an excited, confident one. 1 John shifts our gaze away from a mediocre life to an ideal, glorious one.
Life: Light and Love
1 John has a simple, yet emphatic style of language with the use of images like LIFE, LIGHT and LOVE. There’s a number of similarities you might be able to pick up between the book of John (John’s Gospel) and 1 John’s (John’s Epistle, a.k.a. his letter) - even if they aren’t necessarily the same author. You find the images of LIFE, LIGHT and LOVE in both - here’s two verses from John that you might find echoed in 1 John.
“I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the full.” - John 10:10
“A new command I give you: LOVE ONE ANOTHER. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” - John 13:34
Inseparable Truths
John will elaborate on one of these messages, only to thread it back in again later. Rather than circle back to the same thought again and again as it is laid out in 1 John, our talks and studies will be organised by these themes.
The way John weaves these aspects back and forth suggests that we need to apply ALL of these aspects to live out the gospel - if you neglect one, the whole gospel message falls over.
Photo Day
Last year we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of our church. We asked you to write a letter to the church to encourage the congregation, giving praise to God for what He has already done and looking forward to what He will continue to do. We want to publish that book for keepsakes, but it would be all the more commemorative if it had photos of what our church looks like now!
We’re going to take these photos after Sunday Service on 27 October, so make sure you have time to stick around and be part of this!
Church Camp 2024
Useful Guides
We live in a world where we’re bombarded with choices. We’ve even got names like FOMO (fear of missing out) and STABO (Subject To a Better Offer) demonstrating that we’re always living wondering whether there’s always something better that we don’t have. How do you live a life of contentment in a world that is always trying to sell you something more? We’ll be exploring this question together as we delve into the book of Philippians.
Dr William Wan will help us explore how Christians can live a complete life with a heart of contentment. Registrations are open now!
Contented to know Christ
Contented to be like Christ
Contented to rejoice in Christ
Contented to advance the Gospel of Christ.
Three reasons why we look forward to camp
1. To experience church life together
We will enjoy one another, sing together, speak and listen to one another, eat together and devote ourselves to the teaching of God's word together. All the things that made the early church in Acts a vibrant church - we commit the time for these things with one another.
2. To invest in our missional purpose
Living out our faith and making disciples is relational and intentional - it's what God made for us to do. Church camp is a great time to build the relational foundation with people that you serve with, as well as people that you are praying will respond to Christ's message for them.
3. To nurture your spiritual health
Church camp is a time to disconnect from your work and your routines. It's a great time to just be you, among great people. Use this weekend to reflect how God is leading you - in this season and in every season.
Jesus The Game Changer
If you're missing the Olympics after Paris, Olympic fever continues at ECC! Please join us for our very own mini-Olympic games at ECC kids' church on 8th September!
We will have our monthly kids-only service for kids up to Year 6! This month we will have lots of fun Olympic-themed games and craft for the kids, learn a new song and find out about how Jesus changes the game of life - He turns death to victory!
If you’re too old for the kids category - you won’t miss out! Pastor Joel preaching from the same topic: Jesus the Game Changer.
The fun doesn't stop there if you’re a kid. You can join us in the following weeks to learn more about how game-changing following Jesus is. These will be typical Sunday services for our church - with the adults and kids' service starting together at 9.30am, with the kids' program starting partway through the service.
Sunday 15 September
Supreme may not be the most popular pizza topping among the kids, but Jesus is certainly SUPREME - the best! Come and join us to find out why He is the supreme saviour!
Sunday 22 September
Don't we all love getting new clothes? This week, we'll learn about how following Jesus means we get a makeover - we throw off our old selves and put on the new!
Cambodia Short-Term

Registrations of interest are due by August 31, 2024
WHY GO?
to serve OMF MKs (Missionary Kids) by running a kids’ programme at OMF Cambodia’s annual conference. It’s an opportunity to minister to them by spending time with them, teaching them from the bible, praying with and encouraging them. It allows parents the opportunity to fully engage at the conference together with their OMF team mates from across the country.
to learn how to do ministry and mission in a different cultural context. For some it may be to explore the possibility that short term could become long term.
to deepen relationships for ECC with people of Cambodia and the long term missionaries that serve there. It will give us insight to how to pray or support better.
for spiritual growth of both the individual and the church in developing a heart for other peoples.

Term 3 Preaching: Esther
Esther is regarded as the most ‘secular’ book in the Bible. Esther, her uncle Mordecai and God’s people are living in conquered people in a Persian kingdom. You could say they’ve all but assimilated. So where do we see God’s hand, even if His name doesn’t appear in this book of the Bible? And how do we apply this story in the right way as we live in an increasingly secular world?
Destiny Haven Church Visit
For many years we’ve supported Destiny Haven (destinyhaven.org.au). It’s a residential place of healing for women whose lives have been shattered by life-controlling issues including addiction, eating disorders and self-harm. It was co-founded by Janine Epere, who is the daughter of Kel Willis. Kel will be preaching on this Sunday!
Destiny’s goal is to equip vulnerable women with the tools and support they need to lead productive and fulfilling lifestyles. We’re looking forward to some of the women from Destiny Haven joining us for this Sunday Service!
After the service, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the ministry of Destiny Haven by buying some of the products (Belgian chocolate, jewellery, chilli, jams etc) made by women in the program.
The Paradox of Virtue
You did what they told you to do: Work Hard. Do whatever it takes to be happy. Chase your dreams. Be your own boss. But life didn’t deliver.
You’re still not as happy as you would like and worse still, you feel tired, trapped and restless. You don’t like where you are and who you have become.
What if we’ve got things around the wrong way? What if we’re supposed to do the opposite of what we were told? Read more…
Short-Term Mission: Would You Go?
Come and learn from Simon and Angeline Porter at Epping Gospel Chapel, Duntroon Ave, Epping about the roles of individuals, churches and mission organizations in sending and going. Read more …
Term 2 Preaching: Matthew
The Sermon on the Mount is heavenly truth in practice. The teachings might seem opposite to the wisdom of the world, as if Jesus has it “upside down”! In fact, it’s our world which is upside down and Jesus is teaching the right way up! Some lessons will seem hard, but they describe a heavenly reality that God wants you to live out, a reality only made possible in Jesus. Read more…
Youth Social
It’s the end of the first term of Sunday School! After a great term of discussing Hebrews alongside the rest of the church, our high schoolers are going to spend this Sunday afternoon after church for lunch and games. They’re inviting anyone in Year 6 to join them as well. For more details, contact Lauren or Pastor Joel.
Good Friday
Good Friday is a celebration of Jesus’ crucifixion.
His crucifixion symbolically made Jesus the eternal sacrifice for sin.
It means that the punishment that we deserve for our sins has been paid for Jesus.
Join us for a family friendly Good Friday service, easter egg hunt + picnic! We will be at the Centre for Ministry, North Parramatta. Weather permitting, we will hold the service outdoors, near the auditorium (not in the Chapel where we have our usual Sunday service).
After the service, we will be sharing a picnic lunch as a church. Each of our ten growth groups will be working together to bring lunch for their group and our guests, sharing hospitality from our hearts!
Please remember to RSVP - it helps us make sure we have enough teachers for the adjoining kids program, enough easter eggs for the easter egg hunt, enough hot cross buns for morning tea, and enough food to share!
Baptism Service
We’re excited to baptize Ikuto and Helen! We'll worship together, and hear the way that Ikuto and Helen have responded to the love of Jesus Christ in their lives. We welcome everyone to join us as the church, united in Christ.
Join us at Epping Gospel Chapel, Duntroon Ave, Epping for the service starting at Saturday 23rd March, 4pm.
The service will be followed by a celebration dinner - your RSVP is appreciated so we can cater accordingly! Please confirm your RSVP by 18 March.
Ordination Service
Join us for the ordination of Joel Chong, called to serve as the Pastor of Evangelical Chinese Church, Sydney. Your presence and prayers on this occasion would mean a lot and we invite all church members, dear ministers and friends of the church to attend.
The service will be held at our usual Sunday location and commence at 2pm. Afternoon tea will follow after the service.
Please RSVP by 18 February for catering purposes.
Lunar New Year Pot Luck
Chinese New Year is a cultural celebration looking forward to the year ahead and it’s a time when families come together to eat! As Christians, we gather together as God’s family, because of our faith in Jesus. As a Church, we are welcoming everyone to share a special pot luck meal together. Bring a dish, bring a friend or both!
Term 1 Preaching: Hebrews
Through Term 1, we'll be preaching from the book of Hebrews.
Hebrews is one of the books that brings the story of the Bible together in one place. The author marvels that 2000 years of Old Testament history is brought into clear focus through - God is speaking to humanity - bringing unity, forgiveness, confidence and purpose.
There's a little bit of a learning stretch for you if you're not familiar with Jewish Old Testament history. Presumably, the writer is a very devout, religious Jew. He excitedly unpacks how all the important Jewish traditions are either surpassed or fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus is the greater Moses, the greater High Priest, the greater tabernacle, the greater covenant....and so on! Jesus, therefore, is the greatest motivation to do anything and everything!
Through this book, I hope you can challenge traditions or principles you hold. Are the things you live for fulfilling in Jesus, or are you living for less than the best?
Here’s some tips as you get started reading in Hebrews.
RESOURCES
Christmas Day Service
We’re going to begin Christmas Day together, acknowledging the history-changing event of Jesus Christ coming into our world: making God known to all the ends of earth, bringing grace and forgiveness.
Our friend Len Tan will speak on Christology: the nature of Christ who can be known to you too! This is the first of a three talk series which Len will be sharing with us over the summer.
Unlike our usual Sunday services, we won’t share morning tea together after the service - but we still want you to experience the hospitality of the church! We have a number of Christmas gatherings where you’d be welcomed. If you’re interested in some Christmas Day hospitality, please reach out here!
Christmas Eve Service
Come and see how Christmas turns the ordinary into the extraordinary.
God steps into our world to love and save through a baby. Let's look at how Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds all respond differently. How will you respond?
Come join us for a special Christmas service for everyone! Doors are open from 9am, with our service starting at 9:30am. The combined part of the service will be approximately be 30-40mins, after which the kids will break off into different activities, while the adults continue for a short talk.
We’ll have morning tea together afterward.
40th Anniversary Celebration Dinner
To mark the special milestone, we are going to celebrate God’s faithfulness through 40 years of ministry and mission at ECC. We’re holding a celebration dinner at Rhodes Phoenix on 3rd December. The night will commence at 6pm, with doors open at 5:30pm.
During the night, we’ll celebrate with testimonies across the years but also pray together for the years ahead. As we've learned together this year, we need to seek God first so that He will carry and lead us in our mission to nurture and equip disciples of Jesus: for faithful service in our local church and beyond.
We’ve invited all our past ministers who have served our congregation over the years to join us. We also invite anyone who have been connected with the ministry of ECC to join us for this special occasion!
Adults: $60
Children: (5-12 years) - $30
RSVP and payment required by 19th November
Letters to ECC
Ten years ago, we commemorated the life our church in a book called "Food. Faith. Family". For our 40th Anniversary, we're inviting you to write a letter to our church. We would love EVERYONE (yes, everyone!) to contribute. We will collate all the letters to share with the church and commemorate this time.
Here's some ideas on how we'll do it:
Let us know you'll contribute using the button below.
Write electronically (max ~500 words)...or use paper (1-3 pages)
We will collect letters by Sunday 26th November
All are welcome - including kids!
What should you write about? We’re purposely not being overly prescriptive except to say that it should probably start with “Dear ECC” and be a letter that encourages the church! It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a part of our congregation!
Baptism Service 2023
Brother and Sisters in Christ! We have great joy in people responding to the message of Jesus Christ - that He yearns to restore His relationship with us, in perfect love!
We’re holding a baptism service on Saturday 28th October, 4pm. We'll worship together, and hear the way that Jesus has impacted the lives of two people who will be baptised. We welcome everyone who wants to witness this significant occasion to join us in unity with the church found in Christ.
Colby, 22, is currently studying Advanced Computing at USYD. "For the last 8 years, I’ve been on a journey exploring the Christian faith. It was in one of my lowest moments that I discovered what it really means when Christians talk about relationship with God. I felt convicted by the Holy Spirit that I am a sinner in need of God." God has transformed and grown him tremendously in recent years.
Ikuto, 30, is a Japanese primary school teacher at Murray Farm Public School. He decided to follow Jesus from the age of 16. It's been a number of years since then and there's been some ups and downs along with the way. But Ikuto now sees God's goodness in it all and is ready to declare it in his life.
Following the service, we will have dinner together, celebrating with Ikuto, Colby and the church family. Your RSVP is important so we can cater accordingly.

Joshua - The Promised Life
Joshua is our third term series of the year exploring what it means to be a disciple - some who chooses to follow Jesus with the entirety of their life.
In Acts, we uncovered how the collective of Christ followers (that is, the church) express their faith collectively. We discussed how we should apply what we see in the early church to our church today, and described those expressions through magnification, mission, membership, ministry and maturity.
In Luke, we considered people from all walks of life who recognised Jesus’ deity and made the choice to follow Him. While he often healed people demonstrating his compassion and power, Jesus consistently points to our need for forgiveness, which Jesus has the authority to do.
In Joshua, we will explore the story of God’s faithfulness to his Old Testament promises. As the Israelites in this story had to put their full trust in God to be delivered from the troubles around them, we too must trust God to be our strength and deliverance against the culture we face in our lifetime.
If you read ahead, you'll see three strong themes that are repeated through the book:
1. We discover God’s faithfulness to his Old Testament promises. God fulfils every promise he makes. The promises we see fulfilled in the Old Testament give us confidence in the promises that we have in Jesus today!
2. The book of Joshua charges us to be strong and courageous in our obedience to God. There are always competing gods that stand in the way of the relationship God wants to have with us. We trust God to be our strength and deliverance against the competing cultures we face in our lifetime.
3. Joshua gives us the charge to serve God with everything we've got. We're urged to face up to the challenges we're confronted with and bring His good promises to the world we live in today.
We hope that Joshua helps you to recognise God's good promises for you, and challenges you to live with courage and strength for the mission God has for you in your lifetime.
