Term 4: Christianity in Culture

BONUS WEEK! Rev. Dennis Nutt (our regular visiting minister for the life of our church) is keen to add to our unpacking of Christianity in Culture, kicking us off on 19th October.

From Romans 12:1-2, he’s going to preach to us:

  • 5 Ways that Christians have Traditionally Dealt with Culture

  • 3 Ways to maintaining the Culture of Christ in the Church

Our church vision statement is this: To be a disciple-making church, letting Jesus radically transform our lives, our culture and our world.

The idea of this sermon series is to reflect on some of the current topics that impact us all:

  • Digital Distraction

  • Costly Living

  • Aging Faithfully

We will tackle each of these head on - answering the following questions along the way.

  • How does the culture we live in weigh up against what the Bible tells us?

  • What values are we challenged with in our church community?

  • What must we change personally to experience God’s goodness?

  • How does faith in Jesus ultimately help us face our own struggles in our culture?

Digital Distraction. Technology has brought on a wave of change throughout our generation, in fact, some sociologists think of it more as a tsunami. We gained the ability to do so much, literally at our fingertips - but at what cost? How does the Christian gospel shape how we approach this for ourselves and for our families?

Costly Living. We live in one of the most expensive cities in the world, and there are some real anxiety-inducing ramifications. How does the Bible encourage us to have a perspective that is grounded in God’s love for all of humanity - for the rich and the poor? What do our hearts need to be challenged, as people living in Sydney?

Aging Faithfully. There’s many difficulties and fears to acknowledge with the reality of age. What perspective does the Bible give us on aging, for ourselves and in our community? Andrew Cole will help us think through these issues, and sharing from Simeon’s example in Luke 2 - encourage us how we can look forward to ageing in a godly manner - with hope, both for life now, and an even better life to come.

Andrew Cole is a respected Christian who has been a colleague to a number of our members. He is currently Chief Medical Officer at HammondCare, an organization specializing in dementia and aged care, palliative care, rehabilitation, and older persons' mental health.
