Sermon Series: Joshua

Joshua is our third term series of the year exploring what it means to be a disciple - some who chooses to follow Jesus with the entirety of their life.

In Acts, we uncovered how the collective of Christ followers (that is, the church) express their faith collectively. We discussed how we should apply what we see in the early church to our church today, and described those expressions through magnification, mission, membership, ministry and maturity.

In Luke, we considered people from all walks of life who recognised Jesus’ deity and made the choice to follow Him. While he often healed people demonstrating his compassion and power, Jesus consistently points to our need for forgiveness, which Jesus has the authority to do.

In Joshua, we will explore the story of God’s faithfulness to his Old Testament promises. As the Israelites in this story had to put their full trust in God to be delivered from the troubles around them, we too must trust God to be our strength and deliverance against the culture we face in our lifetime.

If you read ahead, you'll see three strong themes that are repeated through the book:

1. We discover God’s faithfulness to his Old Testament promises. God fulfils every promise he makes. The promises we see fulfilled in the Old Testament give us confidence in the promises that we have in Jesus today!

2. The book of Joshua charges us to be strong and courageous in our obedience to God. There are always competing gods that stand in the way of the relationship God wants to have with us. We trust God to be our strength and deliverance against the competing cultures we face in our lifetime.

3. Joshua gives us the charge to serve God with everything we've got. We're urged to face up to the challenges we're confronted with and bring His good promises to the world we live in today.

We hope that Joshua helps you to recognise God's good promises for you, and challenges you to live with courage and strength for the mission God has for you in your lifetime.
